The National Concert Hall is delighted to announce a special 60th anniversary screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s immortal thriller The Birds with a new live score written and performed live by Matthew Nolan in collaboration with Seán Mac Erlaine, Sharon Phelan and Eivind Aarset this November.

Frequently lauded as one of Hitchcock’s finest films, The Birds chronicles a terrifying avian assault on the residents of the town - a mysterious spate of violence that no one can explain. The magnum opus marks Tippi Hedren’s compelling screen debut and is frequently cited in top film lists due to its mesmeric direction and bewitching cinematography which provide its uniquely eerie and claustrophobic atmosphere.

For this 60th anniversary screening, Matthew Nolan in collaboration with Seán Mac Erlaine, Sharon Phelan and Eivind Aarset will provide a suitably ominous and haunting score. This is the same team that brought Dracula with live score to the National Concert Hall in 2016 – to rave reviews. Matthew Nolan’s other live film score projects include Metropolis (presented at the NCH in 2014), The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, The Night of the Living Dead (commissioned by NCH in 2018) and The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Matthew’s new score for Solaris (co-written with Stephen Shannon) premiered at the New York Film Festival in 2002 and he has also presented works at Film at Lincoln Centre (New York), National Gallery of Art (Washington DC) and at The Brooklyn Academy of Music.

The Birds is generally regarded as the last great Hitchcock movie (it was shot in 1963, when the director's reputation was at its peak). It might also stand as the essential Hitchcock movie, the purest and most confident, a brilliant distillation of the themes that fuelled the director over the course of his career. Here, Hitchcock juggles shrill B-movie histrionics with chill arthouse gloss. The formal precision of his camerawork, the deft economy of Evan Hunter's dialogue and a sense of location is so sharp and assured that it feels that you’ve been there.

This is an evening not to be missed.
