Take a whistle-stop tour from ancient Egypt to 18th-century France via Russia, Hungary and Italy with BBC Music Magazine Rising Star conductor Olivia Clarke and 2024 Maura Dowdall Prize-winning cellist, Andrés Vaccaro.
Musical picture-postcards along the way include Berlioz’s romantic Roman Carnival, Tchaikovsky’s virtuosic Pezzo capriccioso, two exuberant Hungarian Dances by Brahms, and Fauré’s aching Élégie. Paganini’s Variations on a Theme from Rossini’s Moses in Egypt shows off the cello at its most expressive.
Rossini himself provides a touch of mischief and mayhem with his lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek Overture to Il signor Bruschino.
