A night to relish with two Romantic masterpieces – a landmark concerto and a ballet score for the ages – in our National Concert Hall Friends Gala conducted by the internationally in-demand Hans Graf.
Exciting young talent and fast-rising star-in-the-making, María Dueñas brings her ‘golden, singable, vibrant sound’ (El Pais) to the emotional breadth, elegance and virtuosic brilliance of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto.
Her recording of the concerto – her first for the venerable Deutsche Grammophon label – received universal praise and five-star reviews for its combination of the lyricism and the dramatic.
Celebrated for its lyrical grandeur and poetic boldness, Beethoven’s concerto is a masterly display combining virtuosic challenges for the violin and orchestral richness that set a new standard and influenced generations of composers who followed.
Prokofiev’s lavish and luxurious Romeo and Juliet is an emotionally ravishing, drama-filled depiction of ill-fated love, its every melody immediately memorable. Highlights include the menacing, brass-bold march of ‘The Montagues and the Capulets’, the innocent vitality of ‘The Young Juliet’, the exuberant merrymaking of ‘Masks’, and the intense violence and sombre aftermath of ‘The Death of Tybalt’.
