Quiet Lights with Rosie Carney, Landless and Anna Mieke
Tuesday 23rd October 2018
8:30pm - The Studio
Quiet Lights will showcase some of Ireland's most exciting and emerging folk talent for an intimate evening of songs old and new. Featuring Rosie Carney, Landless and Anna Mieke
Donegal singer Rosie Carney has been making waves in the music industry for some time, despite only being 20 years old. She is joined by female quartet Landless who produce traditional vocal harmonies without instrumentation. Their stripped-back approach challenges our preconceptions of what Irish traditional music is.
Anna Mieke hails from Co.Wicklow and composes and performs on guitar and bouzouki, as well as cello and piano in other projects, often collaborating with Brían Mac Gloinn (of Ye Vagabonds) and more recently, percussionist Matthew Jacobson (ReDiviDeR, Clang Sayne).
Produced by Islander.
Presented by NCH in partnership with the Arts Council

Quiet Lights is a unique initiative with a big heart, shining lights on the new wave of Irish folk and traditional talent that are quietly making waves, forging new paths, recollecting old tales and making new stories.
At the age of 16, Donegal’s Rosie Carney signed a record deal that guided her away from the unadorned and honest songwriting that she wanted to pursue. After that false start, Carney knuckled down and got even more real and began to address her battles with anxiety, depression and an eating disorder that occupied her teenage years.
Last year’s single Awake Me, released as a 19-year-old, was a song about escaping the grip of depression. “From down on the dirt / to under mountain tops / where our life stops / and I’ve been a fool / for more than half my life / I’ve tried to hide / awake me / don’t break me,” she sings gently as if lifting the fog and opening her soul to the listener. Landless are Ruth Clinton, Sinead Lynch, Meabh Meirand Lily Power who between them cover the island of Ireland and currently enjoy the ability to record in Cork, Belfast and Dublin. The four-part harmony in this group is wonderful and is partly a product of the experience of Sacred Harp Shape Note singing by both Ruth and Lily. (folkradio.co.uk)
Anna Mieke is a musician, songwriter and composer, hailing from the hills of Co. Wicklow. She composes and performs on guitar and bouzouki, as well as cello and piano in other projects, often collaborating with Brían Mac Gloinn (of Ye Vagabonds; vocals, multi-instrumentalist) and more recently, percussionist atthew Jacobson (ReDiviDeR, Clang Sayne). She has spent a lot of her life travelling, from the west of Ireland to Spain to Bangladesh to New Zealand, and draws on these experiences for songwriting inspiration, both in lyrics and melodies. She has also spent time focusing on traditional Irish music such as Sean-nós singing, fiddle and cello. Anna is currently in the process of recording her debut album and will be releasing late 2018.
