Acclaimed as one of the greatest living violinists, any – and every – appearance by Viktoria Mullova is a must-hear event. She teams up with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and Principal Conductor Jaime Martín for Prokofiev’s powerhouse Second Violin Concerto. This is sure to be one of the season’s most memorable evenings.

One of the 20th-century’s greatest concertos, it’s a gymnastic challenge for the violin – a high-wire act performed by a singing ballerina – putting it through its paces with acrobatic agility and poetic delicacy. The orchestral accompaniment is no less nimble and lush in the inspired second movement – a long-breathed confessional by the violin – and the dance-like delirium of the finale.

The greatest composer to emerge from Russia in the 20th century, Dmitri Shostakovich’s music was shaped by constant conflict with his murderous Soviet paymasters. Composed shortly after Stalin’s death, his seething, granite-edged Tenth Symphony is a turbulent, tentative testing of music’s ability to reveal public threats and private fears and hopes. Intense and intensely moving, it’s also a stirring call to action.

Ian Wilson’s bold, brassy, image-saturated Man-o’-War is a brilliant orchestral showpiece: an incident-filled soundtrack to an imagined film that brings the violent, storm-tossed, becalmed and hellish life on board a sail-driven warship into vivid, visceral immediacy.
