Angela Gheorghiu – ‘the most glamorous and gifted opera singer of our time’ (New York Sun) – makes an unmissable, all too rare, appearance with the National Symphony Orchestra for an evening of opera’s greatest soprano arias.

In constant demand in the world’s leading opera houses and concert halls, Angela Gheorghiu has become ‘the most instantly recognisable and interesting soprano voice of our time, a liquid instrument of great lyrical beauty with “spun gold” high notes, but a dark, vibrant, contralto range’ (Sunday Times).

An evening of operatic highlights and songs from Italy and Gheorghiu’s native Romania show off her lustrous voice to thrilling effect in Dvořák’s hauntingly beautiful ‘Song to the Moon’ (Rusalka), Puccini’s achingly tender ‘Donde lieta usci’ (La bohème) and heart-breaking ‘In quelle trine morbide’ (Manon Lescaut) and Gluck’s sublime ‘Che farò senza Euridice?’ (Orfeo ed Euridice).

There’s colour and charm aplenty in Giordani’s exquisite Caro mio bien, Iosif Ivanovici’s lilting, loving Barca pe valuri, and soaring Neapolitan romance in Non ti scordar di me by Ernesto De Curtis.

Long-time collaborator Ciprian Teodoraşcu provides some of opera’s greatest orchestral moments including the thrilling Overture to Verdi’s La forza del destino, Leonard Bernstein’s effervescent Candide Overture, the sensual, seductive Overture and Habanera from Bizet’s Carmen, and two heart-melting Intermezzos by Puccini.
