Mariza is the undisputed queen of fado. Born in Africa, brought up in Lisbon, she draws on an awareness of other music from the blues to tango, while loving the fado tradition.
Born in Mozambique to a Portuguese father and Mozambican mother, she was brought up in Mouraria, one of the traditional fado neighbourhoods of Lisbon. While loving the pure tradition, Mariza has commissioned new fados and expanded the form in her collaborations with Spanish and Brazilian musicians. A charismatic performer on stage and an eloquent ambassador for this much-loved Portuguese style: if you’re going to see fado, see Mariza.
‘Mariza’s voice has ripened into a more expressive and seductive instrument than ever – the effect is like crossing the purity of Joan Baez with the emotional heft of Edith Piaf. This is soul-bearing at its most thrilling’ Songlines
‘If fado is synonymous with melancholia, she reminds us how much joy and sensuality reside in the music as well’ The Times
‘Newcomers and long-term admirers alike won’t be disappointed’ The Sunday Times
Her new album Mariza Sings Amália is released in May 2020.
Usually just known as ‘Amalia’, she was the first person who took fado to international stages. ‘For us Amália is still very alive in our memory,’ says Mariza. ‘So the idea is to make a tribute to her and say thank you so much. Of course, it’s intimidating. Even after 20 years, it’s never going to be easy to sing something Amália sang.’
