Emanuel Ax is one of the most complete pianists of today – technically solid, deeply intelligent, and with a heart

Beethoven Bagatelle in A minor, WoO 59 Für Elise
Beethoven Sonata No. 2 in A major, Op. 2, No. 2
Beethoven Variations in F major, Op. 34
Beethoven Sonata No. 1 in F minor, Op. 2, No. 1
Beethoven Variations on Rule Britannia for piano in
D major, WoO 79
Beethoven Sonata in C major, Op. 2, No. 3

“Marvellously articulate and totally unfussy. Nothing is done for effect or to draw attention to the player rather than to what he is playing”, so said The Guardian of eminent pianist Emanuel Ax’s playing. The legendary pianist, whose recordings with cellist Yo-Yo Ma of the Beethoven and Brahms Sonatas for cello and piano have earned Ax a series of Grammy® Awards, will perform a programme of early works by Beethoven as part of our ‘Beethoven: Before and After’ strand.

Composed in 1794/5, Beethoven dedicated his three sonatas Op. 2 to his teacher Joseph Haydn, though master and pupil had had a contentious relationship, to say the least. That Beethoven was heading in new directions is already clear from the more intensive emotional content of these works and in their technical
demands on the performer. This recital also offers a unique opportunity to hear Beethoven’s popular Für Elise and the rarely heard Variations on Rule Britannia in D major, making it an ideal opportunity to witness the emergence of Beethoven as the composer considered to be one of the greatest of all time.

Pre-Concert Talk - 6.45pm  - Kevin Barry Recital Room

Insights into the Piano Works of Beethoven through Colma Brioscú’s Music Career.

This pre-concert talk is presented by RIAM Head of Keyboard, Colma Brioscú. Colma will include aspects of Beethoven’s life and career; an outline of the Sonatas op 2 nos. 1,2 & 3; her own contact with Beethoven’s music as a student, performer and teacher; and a comparison of different pianists approaches to the music of the great composer.

Colma Brioscú studied piano with John O’Conor and Valerie Walker at the RIAM. Since returning to Dublin in 1983 she has concentrated on her teaching career, joining the staff of the RIAM in 1986.

Colma is RIAM’s Head of Keyboard since 2015. She is currently the Chairperson of the Board of Studies, the Academic Council of the RIAM. In 2019 Colma was awarded the title of life Professor at the RIAM.
