The National Concert Hall is delighted to announce singer/songwriter Melody Gardot (4th July), vocalist, songwriter and composer Rufus Wainwright (20th July) and poll topping Australian guitarist Tommy Emmanuel (27th July) as the headline acts to perform this July at the National Concert Hall.
The Grammy-nominated international best-selling singer / songwriter and self-styled “citizen of the world” Melody Gardot take us on another musical voyage on 4th July, 8.30pm at the National Concert Hall.
In her album Currency of Man she travels not to new place but back in time, rooting her lyrics in a social consciousness that inescapably and urgently speaks of the here and now. With its funky bass rhythms, retro-soul brass arrangements, euphoric gospel singers and esoteric orchestrations, the songs on Currency of Man are the very antithesis of ‘smooth jazz’. In a departure that is sure to surprise her more conservative fans, they transport us back to the late Sixties and early Seventies.
Having performed with various artists such as Elton John, David Byrne, Mark Ronson, Joni Mitchell to Burt Bacharach, Rufus Wainwright is regarded as one of the great male vocalists, songwriters of his generation. The National Concert Hall is delighted to welcome Rufus Wainwright to perform an intimate concert for Irish fans, on 20th July at 8pm in what will be one of the highlights of the summer.
The Grammy nominated artist has released seven studio albums, three DVDs, and three live albums to date as well as composing his first opera Prima Donna, which was recorded as a double CD/vinyl by Deutsche Grammophon. He is currently working on his second opera about Roman Emperor Hadrian which was commissioned by the Canadian Opera Company, to be premiered in late 2018.
Other recent achievements include the 2012 world premiere of Sing Me The Songs That Say I Love You: A Concert for Kate McGarrigle, the feature length music documentary that captured the May 2011 tribute concert honouring Rufus’ late mother, the legendary Kate McGarrigle.
Two-time Grammy nominee Tommy Emmanuel is one of Australia’s most respected musicians. He performs a unique concert on 27th July at 8pm at the National Concert Hall. Voted ‘Favourite Acoustic Guitarist’ in both Guitar Player Magazine and Acoustic Guitar Magazine’s reader polls, Tommy’s unique style of playing is favoured by many worldwide. His inimitable style – he calls it simply “finger style” – is akin to playing guitar the way a pianist plays piano, using all ten fingers. Rather than using a whole band for melody, rhythm, bass, and drum parts, Tommy plays all that – and more – on one guitar. It’s Never Too Late, his new album, was released in September 2015.
