A conversation between neighbours in song hosted by writer and broadcaster John Kelly, England celebrates the musical interplay between Ireland and England.

From the songs of the Rising to The Same Old Story and songs sung by soldiers in The Great War to Ewan MacColl’s Tunnel Tigers, the musical dialogue between Ireland and England has been alive for many years. English folk singer Martin Carthy is “arguably the greatest English folk song performer, writer, collector  and editor of them all” according to Q Magazine. Cáit O’Riordan was a founding member of the ever-influential The Pogues and is now a solo artist.  Cathal Coughlan left Ireland in the 1980s to pursue music in London with his iconoclastic and influential bands Microdisney and The Fatima Mansions. Paul Brady and Andy Irvine are amongst Ireland’s most significant songwriters. The quickly emerging Lisa O’Neill is one of Ireland’s most exciting tunesmiths. The acclaimed Irish song-writer Declan O’Rourke is, according to Brendan Graham of Hot Press Magazine “not a songwriter within the ordinary definition of the word. He is a sorcerer of songs, with a Dickensian skill for finding the moment that details some aspect of our humanity” Kevin Rowland and Dexys (Midnight Runners) are one of the great pioneers of English pop. From an Irish emigrant family background, Kevin Rowland has always drawn on this Irish musical heritage.

With musical director Kate St. John and a band featuring Neill MacColl and Steve Nieve, this concert is a meeting of Irish and English musicians taking us on a journey in song.
