Gamelan Ensemble
Level 1: 6.00pm - 8pm, Tuesdays
Level 2: 8.15pm - 10.15pm, Tuesdays
The National Concert Hall was privileged to receive a gift of a full Gamelan Orchestra from the Sultan of Yogyakarta in 2014. This fascinating instrument consists of a wide variety of gongs, bells, and xylophone-type instruments, and produces a magical sound when played.
It is usual for gamelans of such distinguished and auspicious origins to receive a blessing and a name when they leave the artisan’s workshop, and this gamelan has been named Kyai Jati Roso. Kyai is an honorific term bestowed upon important or sacred artefacts, while Jati Roso translates as Pure Consciousness.
The Gamelan is a terrific instrument for both learning and performing, and we currently have two ensembles working on a variety of education and performance activities.
These courses are open to anybody over the age of 16.
